Spices

The world's first spices came from India. The best ones still do. The largest producer and exporter of spices in the world, India dominates the international food market. Over sixty varieties of spices are produced in the country of which about twenty five are commercially important.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is used as a spice as well as in medicine. India is one of the major producer, consumer and exporter of black pepper in the world. Black pepper is cultivated to a large extent in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and to a limited extent in Maharashtra, North eastern states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Cardamom

Cardamom, also known as Elaichi, is one of the oldest known spices in the world. Evergreen forests of Western Ghats of South India are considered as the centre of origin as well as natural habitat of cardamom. Cardamom is commercially cultivated for its dried fruits, or capsules.

Clove

Clove sold in the markets is the aromatic, dry, fully grown, but unopened flower buds of the clove tree. The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba (now part of Tanzania) and Indonesia are the major producers of clove in the world. In India, clove is mostly grown in the hilly tracts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Chili Peppers

Chili Peppers were introduced in India by the Portuguese towards the end of the 15th century. In 2016, 34.5 million tonnes of green chili peppers and 3.9 million tonnes of dried chili peppers were produced worldwide. Global production of dried chili peppers was about one ninth of fresh production, led by India with 36% of the world total.

Turmeric

Turmeric is used as condiment, dye, drug and cosmetic in addition to its use in religious ceremonies. India is a leading producer and exporter of turmeric in the world. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, West Bengal, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Assam are some of the important states cultivates turmeric, of which, Andhra Pradesh alone occupies 35.0% of area and 47.0% of production.
